Many rivers in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts have been receiving significant amounts of water with the incessant rains in their catchment areas located on the Andhra-Odisha border. The rivers which were almost dried up completely about a week ago with the impact of El Niño, are now seen with a constant flow of water.It is a blessing in disguise for the farmers who were worried about the standing crops which needed more water.Also read: A.P. Chief Minister warns of severe water stress due to El NiñoAs per the latest data provided by the irrigation department, the Gotta barrage constructed on the Vamsadhara River received 15, 647 cusecs of water and the same quantity of water was released for the benefit of crops.Thotapalli project constructed on the Nagavali River has sufficient quantity of water with the continuous inflows into the river from its catchment areas.Also read: Low-pressure system causes rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, IMD issues alertsNagavali was seen full of water at Srikakulam city which depends on the river for its drinking water needs.Thatipudi reservoir, constructed on the Gosthani River, received 15,111 cusecs of water on Tuesday (August 25, 2026).Irrigation officials discharged 12,700 cusecs of water to benefit crop areas of Gantyada, Gajapathinagaram, Jami and surrounding areas of Vizianagaram district. Madduvalasa reservoir located in Rajam Assembly constituency of Vizianagaram district received 1342 cusecs of water and 710 cusecs were discharged for irrigation needs. The rainfall was deficit in 24 mandals in June, July and first fortnight of August, 2026.The farmers as well as officials of the Agriculture Department, hoped that a sufficient quantity of water through rainfall and irrigation canals would be available in the ensuing months. Vizianagaram Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy directed the agriculture department to meet the requirements of farmers in the backdrop of availability of water for crops.“Apart from agricultural water needs, we are focusing on drinking water requirements of people living in Vizianagaram and other places. The groundwater levels have depleted with the impact of El Niño. We are hopeful of improvement of water levels with the decent rainfall in the last few days,” said Mr. Ramsundar Reddy while speaking to The Hindu. Published - August 25, 2026 01:12 pm IST
