Agriculture activity has improved significantly with the rivers receiving a decent amount of water, thanks to the recent rains in their catchment areas located at the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border. With the impact of El Nino, many farmers stayed away from agriculture activity this year with the fear of non availability of water from irrigation canals.Many rivers such as Nagavalli, Suvarnamukhi, Vegavathi and Gomukhi which pass through hilly and plain regions are being seen with decent amounts of rainfall in their catchment areas. According to officials, the agriculture activity will pick up further in the months of September and October as the irrigation department is all set to release water to the agriculture fields through canals.The crop area is around 80,000 hectares and many farmers grow paddy, sugarcane, maize, groundnut, pulses cashew, turmeric, ginger and others. The government has initially estimated that the deficit of rainfall would be around 31% and it would have an impact on the farm activity. Now, the situation has slightly improved with the decent rains in all 15 mandals including Parvatipuram, Saluru, Kurupam, Gummalakshmipuram and other places.Parvatipuram Collector N.Prabhakar Reddy directed the agriculture department to make arrangements for adequate supply of fertilisers for the farmers in the backdrop of improvement in agriculture activity. The fertilisers are being supplied through 268 Rythu Seva Kendrams established in different parts of the district.Minister for Tribal Welfare Gummadi Sandhya Rani said that the district had got first place with the production of 5.50,921 metric tonnes of farm products in previous year and hoped for the improvement of agriculture production in spite of El Nino impact.
