Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the latest round of US tariffs by calling them “an attack in a war,” signaling that Ottawa has no intention of backing down from what has become the most significant North American trade conflict in decades.
The US imposed a blanket 50% tariff on approximately $20B worth of Canadian exports, effective late on August 22, 2026. Canada’s answer: matching retaliation, dollar-for-dollar, set to begin September 8.

The tariffs target some of Canada’s most important export sectors, including vehicles, auto parts, and steel.
Carney framed the US actions as something Ottawa had long anticipated. He described the terms as ones “we not just suspected, but had confirmed through negotiations,” suggesting Canada viewed the tariff escalation as an inevitability rather than a surprise.
