Newcastle United and Manchester City have struck a verbal agreement for the transfer of midfielder Nico González, with a base fee of £47 million and up to £3 million in potential add-ons. The deal, finalized on August 24, represents Newcastle’s most significant midfield acquisition of the summer as the club scrambles to fill the gaping holes left by two marquee departures.
González, 24, spent just 18 months at the Etihad after joining from Porto in February 2025 for roughly £50 million. City are essentially letting him go at a slight loss on the base fee.
A midfield in need of surgery
Newcastle’s urgency here is hard to overstate. The club sold Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal for £75 million this summer and watched Sandro Tonali depart for Tottenham. Those two players were the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s midfield, and their exits left new manager Matthias Jaissle with a problem that couldn’t be solved by optimism alone.
González offers a profile that addresses the gap directly. He’s a La Masia graduate with Premier League experience, having made 41 appearances for City during the 2025-26 season. The caveat: only two of those were Premier League starts after January, suggesting he was sliding down the rotation rather than climbing up it.
