Newcastle United have agreed a deal with Manchester City for midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The Tyneside club are set to pay £48million up front and around £4m in potential add-ons, for the 24-year-old, who has been given permission to travel to Newcastle for a medical. The Athletic first reported that Newcastle were in talks for Nico on August 18.Nico has been a priority target for Matthias Jaissle and if all progresses as planned will become the head coach’s second signing this week.Beyond a holding midfielder with Premier League experience, Jaissle is also pushing for attacking reinforcements, with No 10s being considered. Former Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku was a loan target, but he opted to move back to his former club RB Leipzig from AC Milan rather than head to Tyneside. But the north-east club have been seeking midfield reinforcements this summer following the expected departure of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and the unwanted sale of Bruno Guimaraes, the former club captain, to Arsenal, and talks over a deal for Nico ramped up last week.Nico made 41 appearances for Manchester City during the 2025-26 season but started only two Premier League games after January, including the final match of the season when Pep Guardiola selected a number of fringe players.
