Madurai Corporation to give Anna Bus Stand land to Govt. Rajaji Hospital for establishing an integrated regional cancer centre in Madurai.

In a major announcement, the Corporation of Madurai has informed that it would hand over 86 cents of land (approximately 37,450 square feet) to the Government Rajaji Hospital for establishing an integrated regional cancer centre on Monday.In a special resolution tabled at the Corporation council meeting held at the Anna Maaligai, Mayor (in-charge) T. Nagarajan said that following a request letter from the Madurai District Collector, the civic body, in consultation with the government, had agreed to give the land.As per the law, the price of the land for sale consideration would be fixed at ₹5,000 per sq. ft. Once the Corporation received the letter, it would issue an NOC, with which the government (Health and Family Welfare Department) could proceed with the construction of the new facility.The Mayor also informed the council that 3.12 acres of Corporation land had already been given to the Government Rajaji Hospital and the sale price would be considered at ₹5,000 per sq. ft.In another resolution, the Mayor said the Corporation would be authorised to employ 220 additional Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBC) for three months from September 1 to November 30 to prevent any outbreak of disease during the monsoon.Welcoming the resolutions across party lines, councillors from the DMK, AIADMK, CPI(M), VCK and Congress said establishing a cancer centre was essential given the rising incidence of the disease and would ensure that people need not travel long distances for treatment.The GRH already functions as the referral centre for the southern districts, where many complicated cases have been successfully treated by doctors and surgeons.The Mayor thanked the government and the Director of Municipal Administration.Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar and other officials were present.
