A two-month-old child has become one of the youngest patients in India to undergo a robot-assisted surgical procedure performed by a paediatric specialist, with doctors at Citizens Specialty Hospital in Nallagandla, Hyderabad, successfully completing a robotic pyeloplasty.The procedure was performed Prabhu Karunakaran, consultant paediatric urologist, to correct a condition affecting the infant’s kidney and ureter and restore normal urine flow. The minimally invasive robotic procedure was performed instead of conventional open surgery, and the baby was discharged two days after the operation.The procedure adds to the hospital’s experience in paediatric robotic surgery. In 2023, Mallikarjuna Reddy had performed robotic surgery on a 21-day-old infant, making the latest procedure the hospital’s second milestone involving one of the youngest paediatric patients in the region, with the surgeries performed by different specialists.Robotic-assisted pyeloplasty can offer several advantages over open surgery, including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain and faster recovery.
