Apollo Children’s Hospital, on Wednesday (July 8, 2026), launched a Centre of Excellence in Paediatric Robotic Urology, marking the completion of more than 400 paediatric robotic procedures.Speaking at a press conference on the occasion, V. Sripathi, senior consultant paediatric urologist and robotic surgeon, traced the journey of the robotics programme, from skill mastering and performing increasingly complicated procedures on children and infants, to building awareness and finally, training surgeons, and other healthcare institutions all over the country.Noting that outcomes of their procedures were analysed, Dr. Sripathi said that they had found a 98.4% success rate in an analysis of 200 pyeloplasty procedures performed over a period of 10 years, and the results of this were published.Aims of the Centre of Excellence included performing advanced urological procedures, adding services for robotic thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and hepatobiliary procedures. This apart, overseas collaborations were also being looked into, he said.Ilankkumaran Kaliamoorthy, chief exective officer, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai Region highlighted the significance of robotic procedures for children: minimal blood loss, shorter hospital stays, less pain and very small scars, and quicker recovery periods.Sindoori Reddy, director - strategy, Apollo Hospitals, formally launched the Centre of Excellence, which was attended by a number of parents and their children who had undergone robotic procedures.Sushila Narayanasamy, unit head, Apollo Women’s & Children’s Hospitals, Chennai, was among those who participated.
