A two-year-old girl from Bhongir, who had been suffering from severe seizures almost every day since the age of six months, has become seizure-free following advanced epilepsy surgery at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad.The girl was suffering despite treatment with multiple anti-seizure medications for nearly a year. The recurrent seizures were also associated with delays in her speech, physical growth and cognitive development.She was brought to the hospital on July 26, where she underwent a pre-surgical evaluation. Brain MRI and PET-CT scans identified a small lesion in the left temporal region, close to the amygdala and hippocampus. Doctors identified the abnormal tissue as the likely source of her seizures.N. Varsha Monica Reddy, senior paediatric neurologist, said controlling seizures at an early age is important as the developing brain has a high degree of neuroplasticity. The child subsequently underwent an anterior temporal lobectomy, during which the abnormal lesion responsible for the seizures was removed, said R.Ayyadurai, senior neurosurgeon.A post-operative EEG showed that the abnormal electrical brain activity detected before surgery was no longer present.
