Firefighting crews continued battling a large wildfire in Bulgaria's Haskovo region, where flames have spread across nearly 10,000 decares, or about 1,000 hectares, near the villages of Dinevo, Koren, Krivo Pole and Malevo.
Seventeen fire brigade teams, a bulldozer and a helicopter were deployed during the operation, helping prevent the fire from reaching the nearby settlements. Military personnel, forestry workers, municipal employees and volunteers are also involved in efforts to contain the blaze.
Senior Commissioner Mitko Chakalov, director of the Regional Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection in Haskovo, said part of the southern front had been contained overnight. The main remaining threat is along the northern front toward Dinevo, where the flames approached the last houses in the village.
"The area of the fire is nearly 10,000 decares. Last night we managed to localize part of the southern front. For today, the front that is to the north remains – the village of Dinevo," Chakalov said.
He said firefighters planned to create a clearing along the front toward Malevo to help prevent the fire from spreading toward the village and limit its advance to the river in the area.
