A powerful storm that swept across Lithuania on Saturday has already caused more than €1 million in insured losses, with more than 1,700 claims registered by Monday morning, according to insurer Lietuvos Draudimas. The company expects the total to rise further as residents continue reporting damage, potentially reaching €3 million.
“This was undoubtedly the largest storm of the year,” said Mantas Norkus, head of Lietuvos Draudimas’ customer service centre. Most of the damage was to buildings and other property, caused by strong winds, falling trees and branches, and heavy rainfall; vehicle damage alone has already exceeded €100,000.
Claims have come in from all 60 of Lithuania's municipalities, with Kaunas and Vilnius the hardest hit, alongside the district municipalities of Panevėžys, Kaišiadorys, Kėdainiai, Utena and Klaipėda.
Norkus said some residents have not yet been able to report damage, as several regions were left without electricity or mobile coverage during the storm. As a result, the usual three-working-day deadline for registering claims is not being enforced, and reports can be submitted later.
Lietuvos Draudimas registered 7,500 weather-related housing damage claims in 2025, with total compensation exceeding €4.6 million.
