Street play campaign launched in Chennai to promote sexual and reproductive health

The Centre for Women’s Development and Research (CWDR) organised a street play campaign, Puthuyugam Padaipom – Let’s Create a New World, to promote awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among adolescents and young people.The campaign seeks to encourage conversations on sexual and reproductive health, menstrual dignity, bodily autonomy, gender equality, and prevention of gender-based violence, while challenging social taboos and misinformation and promoting informed decision-making.The campaign was launched on Sunday at Medai – The Stage in Chennai, with actor and director Revathi inaugurating the initiative. The programme featured a street play and interactions aimed at engaging audiences through public theatre. The street play was created and directed by Pralayan S. of Chennai Kalai Kuzhu. The organisers said the performance addresses issues often surrounded by silence, stigma, and misinformation.K.R. Renuka of CWDR said SRHR discussions needed to be taken beyond closed spaces and into communities. She said sexual and reproductive health and rights are closely linked to women’s dignity, equality, education, safety, and freedom.The launch marks the beginning of a wider street play campaign across Tamil Nadu, with performances planned in educational institutions and communities. Through public performances and audience interactions, CWDR aims to encourage dialogue, challenge stigma and misinformation, and build greater awareness of the rights of adolescent girls and young women.
