Singabalapha informal settlement
A proposed temporary housing development in Gugulethu has drawn strong opposition from residents and some politicians, who fear the City of Cape Town could create another long-term temporary settlement similar to Blikkiesdorp.
The controversy centres on plans to offer temporary accommodation in Gugulethu to residents of the Singabalapha informal settlement in Observatory, while also creating housing opportunities for residents of the Masonwabe Temporary Relocation Area and the broader Gugulethu community.
Thetha Community Organization, led by Nombeko Leputhing, has urged residents to object to the proposal, arguing that Gugulethu already faces serious housing pressures.
“Gugulethu already has serious housing challenges. Our communities are struggling with backyarders, overcrowding, hostels, and people who have been waiting for housing for many years,” the organisation said.
