Effective urban planning and sustainable service delivery by the city are becoming more challenging due to the unmanaged expansion of informal settlements.

The continued erection of illegal structures and unlawful occupation of land is contributing to the rapid growth of informal settlements across the City of Tshwane.

During an oversight visit to Centurion's Koekemoer Informal Settlement, Aaron Maluleka, the city’s MMC for Human Settlements, issued this warning while discussing housing and service delivery challenges with residents.

The Koekemoer Informal Settlement is said to have originated from a farm occupied by farm workers and has since expanded over time.

During the engagement, residents raised concerns regarding the lack of permanent services and appealed to the city to provide infrastructure such as sewer connections, piped water, and government-subsidised housing opportunities.
