City of Tshwane has started the process of relocating people from various informal settlements in the city

The City of Tshwane has started relocating qualifying households from informal settlements across the metro to serviced stands at Leeufontein Extension 32 as part of its ongoing efforts to formalise settlements and improve access to housing and basic municipal services.

MMC for Human Settlements, Aaron Maluleka, announced on Thursday that the relocation process is already under way, with the first phase taking place at the Tsunami Informal Settlement in Ward 23. A total of 162 qualifying households are currently being moved to the newly developed township.

The programme will expand on July 6 to include six additional informal settlements. These are Nkandla in Ward 67 (45 structures), Mavuso in Ward 86 (45 structures), Willow Farm in Ward 86 (30 structures), Mamelodi Extension 11 in Ward 97 (55 structures), Youth View in Ward 28 (30 structures), and Soul City Informal Settlement in Ward 28 (30 structures).

From July 15, the City will also allocate serviced stands to a further 23 qualifying households registered on the National Housing Needs Register. Officials said this will ensure that residents who have been waiting through the formal housing allocation system also benefit from the programme.
