A billion users walked into a bar. Two percent of them ordered the interesting thing on the menu. That is roughly the situation at OpenAI right now.

OpenAI disclosed at an all-hands meeting, later reported by CNBC, that its AI coding and agent features have reached 20 million weekly active users as of August 19, 2026. Set against OpenAI’s overall base of roughly 1 billion active ChatGPT users, it represents about 2% penetration.

The numbers behind the milestone

OpenAI’s overall revenue run rate climbed 35% quarter-to-date, while enterprise revenue run rate grew by more than 50% over the same period.

Co-founder Greg Brockman put the agent user count at somewhere between 10 million and 20 million users. Demand for deeper agent interactions is apparently running ahead of available infrastructure.
