Governor Sim Fubara has said he had at a point concluded that Nigeria had abandoned Rivers State. He however, said the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima in the state to unveil a sensitive road project that would drive kidnappers away has reassured him that Rivers State was still part of Nigeria.
Rivers State was in deep crisis and Fubara was under huge oppression by federal forces with some home forces uptill state of emergency, clampdown of the state’s accounts, quashing of local council elections, etc. Respite seems to return gradually.
Now, Fubara, who expressed happiness at the presence of the Vice President at the commissioning ceremony, said it was a demonstration of the fact that Rivers State remains an integral part of Nigeria and that the country is standing by the state.
“For a long time, I felt that maybe, we’re not part of this country. But today, I feel very happy that our country is also standing by us. I feel happy and fulfilled that even in the face of all our trials, the face of all the ordeals that befell this administration, there are still positive things that people can see and look at and say: ‘Yes, you meant well for the people,” he said.
