The Coimbatore Corporation has launched a pilot initiative to collect textile waste separately from households in Ward 33 of the West Zone, as part of its efforts to prevent the dumping and burning of discarded textiles and promote recycling.Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja launched the ‘Maru Nesavu’ (Reweave) campaign at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in R.S. Puram on Friday (August 21, 2026).As part of the initiative, a training and orientation programme was held for conservancy staff engaged in the collection drive in Kavundampalayam areas of Ward 33. More than 80 workers participated. Mr. Ravi Teja distributed collection bags to conservancy workers and flagged off vehicles deployed for the campaign.Under the initiative, residents in the West Zone have been asked to hand over unwanted textile waste to conservancy workers every Wednesday. The collected material will be segregated and sent for recycling and reuse.Residents can hand over old clothes, bed sheets, blankets, pillow covers, curtains, towels and other household textiles, including torn and unusable pieces of cloth.The Corporation said the initiative would first be implemented in the West Zone and subsequently extended to other zones in a phased manner Published - August 22, 2026 05:59 pm IST
