Premier League clubs have racked up quite the bill this summer. Approximately $3 billion has been splashed across the division, yet not all transfers are created equal. While seismic fees spent on the likes of Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimarães have garnered understandable attention, some of the more cost-effective deals have flown under the radar by comparison. On the cusp of the new season, here are 10 Premier League transfers that might have passed you by. Illan Meslier (Leeds United to Arsenal)Illan Meslier has already won silverware with Arsenal. | Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC/Getty ImagesThe search for a substitute stopper is seldom glamorous, hence why supporters might not have realized that Illan Meslier is now an Arsenal player. One would even be forgiven for forgetting about the Frenchman entirely after the early career promise shown at Leeds United dissipated amid frustratingly frequent errors. The mistakes which saw him drop to third-choice goalkeeper at Elland Road failed to dissuade Mikel Arteta and his recruitment team, who picked him up on a free transfer to provide cover for David Raya alongside Kepa Arrizabalaga. The 26-year-old didn’t play a single minute for Leeds last campaign. He’s unlikely to get many at the Emirates Stadium next season.João Gomes (Wolverhampton Wanderers to Aston Villa)João Gomes had been linked to Manchester United before moving to Aston Villa. | Nicolò Campo/LightRocket/Getty ImagesJoão Gomes had been tipped to join both Manchester United and Atlético Madrid before sticking around in the West Midlands. The tough-tackling Brazilian made the awkward switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Aston Villa, earning quite the promotion in the process. The $46 million transfer was completed the day after this summer’s World Cup final, offering a viable excuse for those who hadn’t clocked his move to Villa Park. The midfielder’s arrival was timely, given Youri Tielemans had joined United the week prior, even if he provides more destruction than creativity in Unai Emery’s engine room. Álvaro Rodríguez (Elche to Bournemouth)The ex-Real Madrid striker has a bright future. | AFC Bournemouth/Getty Images15 years ago, Bournemouth supporters might have fainted with excitement at the prospect of signing an ex-Real Madrid striker. Now it’s par for the course on the south coast as the Cherries continue their clever recruitment with each passing window. Álvaro Rodríguez might be someone Bournemouth intend to flip for enormous profit in several years, with the 22-year-old having enjoyed a productive season with Elche in 2025–26. Seven goals and five assists is respectable in a team that narrowly avoided relegation from La Liga. Whether the Uruguayan forward can kick on in the Premier League remains to be seen, but he’s certainly an exciting addition that adds depth to Marco Rose’s squad as Bournemouth juggle domestic and European duties for the first time. Callum Wilson (West Ham United to Brentford)Callum Wilson continues to float around Premier League clubs. | Eddie Keogh/Getty ImagesCallum Wilson’s future appeared uncertain following West Ham United’s relegation last season, but Brentford have taken the plunge on the veteran striker. Signed on a free transfer, he could prove a smart acquisition for Keith Andrews. The 34-year-old will be backup to Igor Thiago, who scored a hugely impressive 22 goals last season, but his clinical touch from the bench will likely add a few points onto Brentford’s total come the end of the campaign—if Wilson can stay fit, of course. The striker managed seven goals in 32 league matches for the Hammers last season, of which only 11 were starts. Pep Chavarría (Rayo Vallecano to Chelsea)Pep Chavarría is Marc Cucurella’s replacement. | Chris Lee/Chelsea FC/Getty ImagesChelsea have been typically active in the transfer window as they embark on yet another overhaul of their roster. Xabi Alonso has been handed a raft of reinforcements, largely comprised of emerging talents and several veteran leaders. However, one of the signings who doesn’t fit either of those categories is Pep Chavarría, the 28-year-old left back bought to help cover for the departed Marc Cucurella.Signed for $21.6 million from Rayo Vallecano—the club he represented for the last four years—the defender appears an astute pick-up that has seen Chelsea stray from their usual transfer strategy. Only time will tell how much he actually plays under Alonso. Takehiro Tomiyasu (Ajax to Crystal Palace)Takehiro Tomiyasu is back in the Premier League. | Sebastian Frej/Getty ImagesTakehiro Tomiyasu spent four seasons with Arsenal, but his final campaign in north London was utterly miserable. A major knee injury saw him feature just once, before his contract was terminated by the Gunners. He eventually wound up joining Ajax last December. But the Japan international, who played three games at the World Cup, is now back in England’s capital after being signed by Crystal Palace on a free transfer. The versatile defender is one of several frugal deals conducted by last term’s Conference League champions, who are now under the guidance of Pierre Sage. The French manager will hope Tomiyasu can stay fit for a busy campaign. Christian Nørgaard (Arsenal to Everton)A Premier League title winner has joined the Toffees. | Everton FC/XHe came. He won the Premier League title. He left. That’s the story of Christian Nørgaard at Arsenal. Only signed by the Gunners last summer from Brentford, the holding midfielder was used sparingly as emergency cover, and has now been set loose after helping Arsenal end their 22-year wait for the Premier League trophy. After allowing Idrissa Gueye to leave at the end of his contract, Everton made their move for the 32-year-old Denmark international, who should feature more readily on Merseyside than he did in north London. Another piece of major silverware is unlikely, though. Karl Darlow (Leeds United to Manchester United)Karl Darlow (right) is now Man Utd’s backup goalkeeper. | Manchester United/Getty ImagesArsenal are not the only ‘Big Six’ side to have bolstered their goalkeeping department with a former Leeds stopper. After allowing the error-prone pair of André Onana and Altay Bayındır to leave on loan for the season, United turned to free agent Karl Darlow in their pursuit of Senne Lammens’s deputy. The 35-year-old enjoyed an impressive second half of the 2025–26 season with Leeds, usurping Lucas Perri in the hierarchy and ultimately racking up 22 league appearances as he helped steer the club clear of relegation. Darlow has zero shot of stealing the No.1 jersey from Lammens at Old Trafford, but should be handed opportunities in the domestic cup competitions. Aladji Bamba (Monaco to Newcastle United)The 20-year-old is tasked with replacing some big names in midfield. | Stu Forster/Getty ImagesOutgoings have dominated the discourse around Newcastle United this summer. Eddie Howe’s departure has been exacerbated by the exits of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Guimarães, but there have been some positive signings that have failed to attract as much attention. Aladji Bamba is one of the young guns drafted in by the Magpies following an enforced overhaul, and the 20-year-old midfielder should earn plenty of minutes in lieu of Tonali and Guimarães. After enjoying a breakout season with Monaco in 2025–26, it will be interesting to see how he fares in a new division and with the pressure of meriting his $47 million transfer fee. Handed the No. 8 jersey, he needs to make a rapid start for the Magpies. Thomas Meunier (Lille to Sunderland)The defender is Sunderland’s sole addition. | Jean Catuffe/Getty ImagesThomas Meunier’s move to Sunderland could quite have easily bypassed many. After all, it’s one of just two signings made by the Black Cats, who are seemingly uninterested in tampering too much with the roster which secured them European soccer under Régis Le Bris last season. The fact that Meunier arrived on a free transfer means Sunderland have added a vast amount of defensive experience to their team without spending a dime. The right back has 83 caps for Belgium and has represented Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and, most recently, Lille over his lengthy career—although this is the 34-year-old’s first taste of the Premier League.
