Explosions were heard across Kyiv late Friday, Aug. 21, as Russia launched several ballistic missiles toward the Ukrainian capital, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. The Air Force first warned of a ballistic missile threat from the northeast shortly before 10 p.m. local time. Minutes later, it reported a missile moving through the Chernihiv region and then heading toward Kyiv.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. “Several ballistic missiles toward Kyiv!” the Air Force reported at 9:59 p.m., followed a minute later by another warning of additional ballistic missiles targeting the capital. Kyiv Post journalist reported that explosions were heard in Kyiv during the air raid alert. The threat was not limited to ballistic missiles. Shortly afterward, the Air Force reported Russian Banderol loitering munitions moving toward Brovary and Kyiv. There were no immediate official reports of casualties or damage from the latest attack. The strike comes just days before Ukraine marks its 35th Independence Day on Monday, Aug. 24. Earlier Friday, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) urged people to remain particularly vigilant in the run-up to and during Independence Day, warning of possible Russian provocations and terrorist attacks. The latest ballistic attack also comes a day after one of the deadliest Russian assaults on the capital this year. According to Ukrainian authorities, 16 people were killed and 42 injured in Kyiv during the Aug. 20 attack, which struck residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.
