Former legal advisor to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Advocate Yvonne Mabule returned to the TRC Cases Inquiry for her cross-examination by legal counsel for the Calata and other families, Advocate Howard Varney.
Advocate Yvonne Mabule, the former legal advisor at the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and member of the Amnesty Task Team (ATT), has once again refuted claims of interference in the prosecution of cases related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) or any other relevant structures.
Appearing for her cross-examination on Thursday, Mabule testified that she was never a member of the ATT but only attended on behalf of then Director-General (DG), Vusi Mavimbela.
Her testimony, delivered during cross-examination before the TRC Cases Inquiry into alleged interference with apartheid-era crimes on Thursday, focused on the extent of the intelligence agency's involvement in TRC matters.
Mabule first appeared before the Inquiry in July 2026, detailing the limited role the NIA played in TRC proceedings. Her recollections, however, were met with scrutiny during the latest session, as legal counsel for the families of notable TRC cases—Adv Howard Varney—pressed her on crucial documents indicating that instructions from the late Jackie Selebi mandated that the NPA must consult the Directors-General Forum prior to prosecuting any TRC case.
