Former Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Etricia Matzke testified before the TRC Cases Inquiry on Wednesday.
Former Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Etricia Matzke has asserted that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) "dismally failed" in prioritising cases stemming from South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Matzke, who previously led the Complaints and Representation Unit within the NPA, detailed the alleged mishandling of TRC cases by the authority's Priority Crimes and Litigations Unit (PCLU), including delays, poor filing and storage of important files and case dockets.
"What I do remember when I went up to the PCLU offices. I was shown cupboards, and there were documents in there, and there were boxes with documents. With all due respect, it was not that I went in and saw a proper system of documents. There were documents, case files, and to my recollection is that they were documents, and I cannot say that I saw dockets and a proper filing system," she stated.
On Wednesday, Matzke appeared before the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry, probing alleged political interference in TRC cases, as alleged by the Calata and other families.
