The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists strengthened its support for opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy to reduce ovarian cancer risk.Removing the fallopian tubes is safe and can reduce lifetime ovarian cancer risk by as much as 78%.Opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy should be considered for patients undergoing hysterectomy, other gynecologic procedures, and certain nongynecologic pelvic and abdominal surgeries.
Ob/gyns should routinely remove fallopian tubes during hysterectomy and recommend opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy (OBS) to patients undergoing other surgical procedures, according to a clinical practice update from the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG).
