OpenAI has rolled out aggressive promotional pricing for its GPT-5.6 series models on OpenRouter, the popular model-routing platform, and the results are already showing up in the traffic numbers.
GPT-5.6 Luna usage on OpenRouter now exceeds the combined traffic of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 and Sonnet 5.
The pricing play
Developers switching from Anthropic’s Sonnet models to Luna are reporting output prices more than 16 times lower.
OpenRouter has set up a dedicated collection page for the discounted models. The promotional pricing appears designed to target high-volume, latency-sensitive applications. Chat services, classification tasks, and other workloads where per-token costs add up quickly are the natural beneficiaries.
