OpenAI is adjusting its prices. Luna, the smallest model in the GPT-5.6 series, will now cost $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per output token -- a price change of 80 percent. Terra, the mid-range model, will become 20 percent cheaper. Sol's prices will likely remain the same. OpenAI has adjusted the pricing structure of its model series several times recently.
Comparing the new prices with those of Chinese models, which have recently made headlines with their comparatively low prices and are reportedly being considered by more and more companies as an alternative due to cost, OpenAI's reduced models are now close to the competition. Luna is now priced close to DeepSeek V4 Pro (Input $0.44, Output $0.87 per million tokens), Terra is slightly below Kimi K3 (Input $3, Output $15 per million tokens).
When calculating tokens with efficiency (because cheap tokens alone are not very helpful if the model uses disproportionately many of them), the situation looks similar; albeit with changed distances.
