CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Three children drowned in the coastal area of Sitio Proper, Barangay Navotas, on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, the Calapan City Police Station said.
The victims — two aged six and another eight — were with their parents and relatives for an advance birthday celebration when they went swimming in the sea.
Around 5:30 p.m., a relative noticed the children struggling in the water and immediately called for help.
Rescue and retrieval operations were carried out with assistance from the Calapan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals but were declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.
