Slack just turned its group chat into something that looks a lot more like a software development studio. The platform is rolling out dedicated coding channels where teams can tag AI agents, assign them tasks, and watch code get written in real time, all without leaving the app where they were already arguing about lunch plans.
The feature, called Slack Code, lets users spin up project-specific channels by tagging agents like Anthropic’s Claude or Cognition’s Devin. Those agents then create dedicated workspaces to tackle coding tasks, drawing context from existing conversations and project history to produce relevant output.
How it actually works
The mechanics are straightforward enough. When someone has an idea, needs to fix a bug, or wants to update a web page, they tag a coding agent in a channel. That agent creates a dedicated code channel for the task, complete with user tabs, diff comparisons for tracking changes, and HTML preview capabilities so teams can see what they’re shipping before they ship it.
“With Slack Code, when you have an idea or need to build a new feature, update a web page, or fix a bug, you simply tag in a coding agent like Anthropic’s Claude or Cognition’s Devin, and that agent then spins up a code channel to tackle the task,” Slack said in its press release.
