Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and extreme price volatility in global energy markets are pushing commercial airlines to an unprecedented financial juncture.

With jet fuel expenses expected to reach $350 billion in 2026, the global airline industry is increasingly turning to advanced operational data and analytical benchmarking to cut fuel consumption and protect fragile profit margins.

According to the latest global financial outlook from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), jet fuel purchases now account for nearly one-third of total operating costs for commercial carriers worldwide.

The financial strain is rapidly eating into industry earnings. While global airlines are projected to stay in the black overall through 2026, net profit margins are forecast to compress to a slim 2.0 percent—down sharply from an already modest 4.2 percent recorded in 2025.
