Former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov is expected to be formally announced as a presidential candidate within days, according to Atanas Atanasov, deputy speaker of Parliament and a leading figure in Democratic Bulgaria.
Speaking to Nova TV, Atanasov said preparations are already underway to establish an initiative committee and organize an election campaign. The nomination mechanism has changed from the broader format originally envisioned, but the goal remains to present Gyurov as a unifying candidate for the pro-European democratic forces.
"There is an expectation from the democratic community that Andrey Gyurov will announce his candidacy. This will most likely happen in the coming days," Atanasov said.
He said the initiative is aimed at mobilizing voters from the pro-European democratic community and preventing their votes from being divided among several candidates. Atanasov described this as the main way to counter what he called the growing concentration of "red power" in Bulgaria, referring to Progressive Bulgaria as a "new socialist party."
