Ukraine’s overnight drone campaign struck a major oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, and several other energy facilities across Russia on Aug. 20, with Russian monitoring channels reporting at least 12 deaths at the refinery. Footage circulating online appears to show an impact at the facility, as well as a Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system attempting to intercept the attacking drones. The reported death toll has not been independently verified. A Russian monitoring channel said at least 12 people were killed and suggested that foreign specialists may be among the casualties, as has reportedly happened in previous attacks on Russian industrial sites.
Ukraine’s Fire Point Confirms Strike Ukraine’s defense company Fire Point also confirmed the attack, saying Ukrainian Defense Forces struck the TANЕCO refinery using Ukrainian-made FP-1 drones. “Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck the TANЕCO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk using Ukrainian FP-1 UAVs,” Fire Point said in a statement. The company described TANЕCO as one of Russia’s largest oil refining complexes, with a designed capacity of more than 16 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The refinery produces diesel and aviation fuel, as well as gasoline and other petroleum products, making it an important part of Russia’s energy infrastructure.
