Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces say they struck the TANECO oil refinery complex in Nizhnekamsk, deep in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan. The target sits more than 1,100 kilometers from the front line, making it one of the farthest-reaching drone operations Ukraine has publicly claimed during the conflict.
TANECO, operated by Russian oil giant Tatneft, processes more than 16 million tons of crude oil annually with a refining depth of up to 99%, placing it among the most technologically sophisticated fuel-processing facilities in the country.
What we know about the strikes
Ukrainian forces confirmed damage to the ELOU AVT-7, a primary atmospheric distillation unit at TANECO. That’s the piece of equipment responsible for the initial separation of crude oil into usable fractions, essentially the first and most critical step in the refining process.
Strikes reportedly occurred across two separate windows: the nights of June 11-12 and July 7-8. Russian sources corroborated the attacks, with local reports documenting visible smoke and fires near the refinery complex.
