Greece’s higher education authority is revising the accreditation criteria for private university programs after a Council of State ruling annulled the licenses and study programs of three institutions that began operating last academic year.
The National Authority for Higher Education (HAHE) said it was moving to comply with the ruling while working with the Education Ministry to restore legal certainty for students and institutions as quickly as possible.
The authority said it would further specify accreditation criteria to meet legal requirements while maintaining full alignment with European standards. It acknowledged the disruption and concern caused to students and their families by the court decision.
The legal challenge is also widening. Administrative law professor Panos Lazaratos, who filed the appeals against the three universities, has lodged new petitions seeking the annulment of licenses recently granted to seven additional private universities.
