A section of the Council of State, Greece’s top administrative court, has annulled the operating licenses and study programs of three private universities with branches in Greece.

The decision of the court, chaired by Vice President Diomedes Kyrilopoulos, concerns CITY University, Keele University and Anatolia College.

Based on initial information, the revocation of the licenses was based on legal issues related to the regulatory acts that govern the operation of the specific institutions and their study programs in Greece.

The annulment applications before the Council of State were filed by Panagiotis Lazaratos, a law professor at the University of Athens. Following the announcement of the ruling, he issued a statement: “I welcome today’s rulings with great joy, for which I have invested a lot of personal effort. May these rulings be a message that reinforces citizens’ trust in justice and in the ideal of a high-level education for Greek children.”

The next step will be the publication of the full reasoning of the court which will lay out the reasons that led to the revocation of the licenses.
