Aligning with a major ramp-up in sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks and vans in China, the EU is seeing an uptick in new sales of electrified trucks, vans and buses, especially in the medium-duty segment, albeit at a steadier and less dramatic pace. A combination of tightening CO2 tailpipe regulations, lower total costs of ownership, preferential road tolls and a wider range of affordable models are supporting uptake. Nonetheless, while sales numbers are up so far in 2026 by volumes sold and market share, they are miles from the highs seen in the period of 2022-25 and are not on track to meet post-2030 CO2 regulations. The biggest barriers to even higher sales center around upfront costs and inadequate charging infrastructure.
Electric Trucks Gain Ground in Europe But Sharper Growth Urged
Countries offering strong support measures are seeing steady growth in sales of electric trucks, lorries and buses, curbing reliance on diesel, but the pace isn't keeping up with regulatory targets.
