Health authorities on Rhodes are on alert following a sharp increase in gastroenteritis cases on the island in recent days.
According to local health officials, around 40 to 50 people a day have been turning to the emergency department of Rhodes public hospital for treatment after developing symptoms of gastroenteritis.
A similar increase has been recorded by private clinics, where gastroenteritis cases currently account for between 40% and 60% of all visits.
Gastroenteritis cases are not unusual on Rhodes during the summer months, when high temperatures and increased tourism can contribute to the spread of gastrointestinal infections. However, doctors say the rise recorded this year has been particularly pronounced.
Despite the increase in cases, no patients diagnosed with gastroenteritis have so far required hospitalization this summer, according to medical authorities.
