A 56-year-old man diagnosed with leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can affect the bloodstream and organs, has been hospitalized in critical condition in the ICU of Zakynthos Hospital, raising concern in the wider region.
The case marks the fifth reported leptospirosis infection in Zakynthos in recent months. Four additional cases were identified last April, one of which was fatal.
The latest diagnosis was confirmed through a molecular test conducted at a specialized laboratory in Thessaloniki.
The 56-year-old, a father of two young children, is suffering from multiple organ failure and is fighting for his life, according to a medical update.
