Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stressed in an interview with Kathimerini the need for much deeper military integration in Europe, including the creation of a permanent “European Legion” that would operate in complement to, rather than in competition with NATO.
Poland’s top diplomat warns that Russia is already waging a “war” against European societies through sabotage, disinformation, assassination attempts and drone attacks, and calls on Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security.
The US administration has argued that Europe should take on a greater share of responsibility within NATO. Do you believe this should happen within the alliance, or do you favor the creation of a parallel European defense system or even a European army?
Τhey are absolutely right. Washington has been signaling for years that its strategic focus is inevitably shifting toward the Indo-Pacific. We must give credit where credit is due: President Trump was spot on during his first term when he called out allies for failing to meet their spending commitments.
Now, in his second term, he has pushed Europe to step up in his own inimitable way. As the European Union, we need far deeper military integration. This is why I strongly advocate for a “European Legion”, a dedicated, standing force that could recruit seasoned professionals from the broader European family, including battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans after the war.
