MANILA, Philippines — The power supply situation in the Visayas may normalize by the end of the month once major coal-fired power plants in the region and Mindanao return to commercial operations, the country’s grid operator said on Friday.

In a media briefing, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said power supply woes in the Visayas persisted amid the shutdown of several power plants.

The situation was further aggravated by the unplanned outage of another power facility in Mindanao, from which the Visayas imports electricity.

“We expect the last two big plants in TVI this month, Aug. 22 and Aug. 30 and we’re hoping that they will come back online,” she said, referring to the two units of Therma Visayas Inc. in Cebu.
