The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) counterintelligence officers have detained another agent of Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU, in the Dnipropetrovsk region. He is suspected of directing Russian artillery and drone strikes on the city of Nikopol.
The SBU said this in a statement seen by Ukrinform.
"According to the investigation, the spotter was a local man who had been recruited by the enemy and deserted from a Ukrainian Armed Forces training center before taking the oath. While hiding at his home, the suspect began looking for 'easy' ways to make money through Telegram channels. A Russian intelligence officer contacted him in one of the thematic groups and offered him cooperation," the statement said.
In exchange for the promise of "quick" earnings, the agent began monitoring the positions of Ukrainian Defense Forces in the frontline city.
"The enemy's priority targets included reserve command posts and combat positions of Ukrainian air defense units protecting the airspace over the Dnipropetrovsk region. The suspect was documented moving around the area to secretly photograph and mark on Google Maps facilities that he believed were being used by Ukrainian defenders," the SBU said.
