Morocco reportedly played a key behind-the-scenes role in securing the release of a French intelligence officer detained and sentenced to 20 years in Mali, according to a report by French newspaper Le Monde, revealing a previously undisclosed dimension to the case.
Yann Christian Bernard Vézilier, a French national and officer of France’s foreign intelligence service, the DGSE, was arrested in Mali in August 2025 and accused of involvement in an alleged plot to destabilise the government of military leader Assimi Goïta.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2026.
Goïta granted Vézilier a presidential pardon on August 13, ending his year-long detention, although the pardon did not overturn his conviction. He was also ordered to leave Mali immediately.
France on Friday, August 14, welcomed Mali’s decision to pardon French intelligence agent Yann Vézilier, who had been serving a 20-year prison sentence, describing the release as a “great satisfaction” after years of tensions between the two countries.
