More than 2,500 police personnel have been deployed in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts as part of security arrangements for the 80th Independence Day celebrations.The police said that surveillance has been increased around religious places, vital installations, places where the public gather in large numbers, and border checkposts. Round-the-clock vehicle-checks and verification of people staying in lodges, hotels, and service apartments have also been initiated. “Around 850 police personnel will be deployed in the district for the celebrations. Security has been tightened on all six border checkposts in the district,” said N. U. Sivaraman, SP (Vellore).Netaji Stadium, venue for the Independence Day celebrations in Vellore, central government institutions, railway stations, and bus terminii have also been brought under surveillance.The police have intensified checks at inter-State check-posts and temporary checkpoints in these districts. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and the sniffer dogs squad have been conducting checks in public places. The police also appealed to the people to inform the nearest police station if they found any suspicious movement of persons or unclaimed objects in public places.Being a temple town, Tiruvannamalai is expected to get a large number of visitors, especially devotees from neighbouring districts and from States like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to Arunachaleswarar temple in town. Traffic arrangements have been put in place to prevent any inconvenience to the public, especially locals as they have been facing regular traffic congestion due to continuous flow of tourist vehicles into the town every day.In Ranipet and Tirupattur districts, surveillance has been increased at identified vulnerable spots. As part of celebrations, more than 100 members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Arakkonam town took out a cycle rally between its station in the town and Thakkolam village, around five km, on Friday.
