A 30-year-old mother was ambushed and shot dead minutes after leaving her Sangre Grande home yesterday morning.Police said shortly before 10 a.m., Shennel Lewis of Bridge Road, Brooklyn Settlement, Sangre Grande, was walking towards Mc Gillvary Road to get public transportation to get to work.As Lewis approached the corner, a white Nissan Tiida stopped nearby. A man exited the vehicle, pointed a firearm at her and fired two shots.

Lewis fell to the ground and died almost instantly. The gunman then returned to the vehicle and fled.Relatives and neighbours who heard the gunshots ran to Lewis’ body and called police. Sangre Grande police and an ambulance arrived shortly after but could not revive her.Officers of the Region Two Homicide Bureau and Crime Scene Unit subsequently examined the scene.When the Express visited Lewis’ Bridge Road home yesterday, several relatives had gathered. They initially declined to speak but about 15 minutes later, a man who identified himself as Lewis’ uncle said she was the mother of one and had her whole life ahead of her.He could not say why she was killed and said he did not know where she worked.“She was a very nice, educated woman who had her whole life ahead of her. A very good person,” he recalled.The uncle said Lewis was born and raised in Sangre Grande and had a degree in fitness education. “But I don’t know where she was working,” he said.He said Lewis owned an SUV but the vehicle was being repaired, which resulted in her having to use public transportation yesterday morning.Contacted yesterday evening, Sangre Grande police said they had not yet established a motive for her killing.Lewis’ murder pushed the murder toll for the year so far to 229 up to last night. On the corresponding date last year, the toll stood at 234.
