Fenway Sports Group reached an agreement to sell a minority stake in its Liverpool soccer club to a group of well-heeled investors that includes Jeff Bezos, Eduardo Saverin, Amit Bhatia and the Mittal family trusts. The consortium, officially 1892 Holdings, is buying about 30% of the Premier League team at a valuation of just over $7 billion, according to someone familiar with the details.

FSG will retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC, per the investment announcement. The valuation marks a huge return on FSG’s investment. It bought the team in 2010 for £300 million ($476 million at 2010 exchange rates). The closing of the deal is subject to regulatory approvals.

It is a record valuation for a soccer club investment, topping James Ratcliffe’s 2024 purchase of a stake in Manchester United at an enterprise value of around $5.8 billion.

Amazon founder Bezos is the world’s third-richest person, with a net worth of $286 billion, according to Bloomberg. His Liverpool investment is via K5 Sports. Saverin co-founded Meta Platforms with Mark Zuckerberg and is worth $32.5 billion; the investment is through EE Capital, the family office of Saverin and his wife, Elaine. Bhatia is the former co-owner of EFL Championship soccer team Queens Park Rangers and son-in-law of Indian steel titan Lakshmi Mittal, who is worth $42.6 billion, per Bloomberg.
