Jeff Bezos is closing in on a deal to become part-owner of one of the most storied clubs in world football. A consortium that includes the Amazon founder, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and investor Amit Bhatia is in advanced negotiations to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club from Fenway Sports Group.
The target is roughly 30% of the club, with the deal reportedly valuing Liverpool at approximately $6 billion. If finalized, it would rank among the highest valuations ever placed on a football club, a rather striking number for an organization FSG purchased for £300 million back in 2010.
Who’s at the table
Bhatia is leading the consortium. Saverin was part of an unsuccessful bid for Chelsea FC in 2022, when the London club was sold following sanctions against former owner Roman Abramovich.
Bezos already owns the Washington Post and has deep ties to the sports world through Amazon’s expansion into live sports streaming. Amazon Prime Video already broadcasts Premier League matches in the UK.
