US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated in an interview with Fox News that the Islamic Republic’s capacity to cause regional disruption is diminishing, while the United States’ ability to escort and transport maritime cargo out of the region has grown.
Responding to a question regarding US control over the Strait of Hormuz, Wright accused Tehran of attempting to “hold the global economy hostage” by disrupting maritime transit, creating severe challenges for regional nations and international trade.
The US Energy Secretary remarked that Tehran is wielding one of its final remaining levers of pressure, though he emphasized that this operational capability is shrinking.
Calling the Islamic Republic’s strategy “doomed to failure,” Wright added that continuing down this path could further erode Iran’s domestic economy and ultimately lead to the “regime’s collapse.”
Wright stressed that American forces have expanded their escort capabilities for commercial vessels and freight movement in the region. In contrast, he noted, Tehran’s ability to disrupt sea lines of communication and exert pressure on the global economy has declined.
