In a significant initiative aimed at addressing the drinking water needs, the Thoothukudi Corporation is set to intensify and regularise daily drinking water supply across all 60 wards from August 15.Although daily water supply is already being implemented in several wards, the corporation plans to expand the service to cover all wards from August 15.According to an information from the Thoothukudi Corporation, there are 36 overhead tanks in the Corporation limits. The Corporation has 93,050 domestic water connections, 3,153 non-domestic water connections and four industrial connections across the 60 wards. At present, daily water supply is being provided to around 40 wards.With the city expanding rapidly, the shortage of drinking water has remained a major concern among residents. Muthu, city secretary of CPI(M), Thoothukudi has welcomed the Corporation’s initiative, however, he stressed the need to sustain the measures in the long-term. He added that several wards, including 15, 16 and 17, currently receive water on alternate days or once in three days. Expanding and regularising the daily supply would provide much-needed relief to the residents in these areas, he said.Speaking on this, Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy stated that the initiative was being implemented with the objective of meeting the drinking water requirements of residents. He added that the Corporation was already implementing 24x7 drinking water supply on a pilot basis in 10 wards, and scaling up the supply across the Corporation would further help streamline the 24x7 water supply system.
