Udupi Urban Development Authority chairman Dinakar Herur on Friday inaugurated a three-day ‘Sasya Santhe-2026’ (plant fair) organised by the Horticulture Department at the Flower Auction Centre (Farmers’ Service Centre) of the Shivalli Model Horticulture Extension at Doddanagudde in Udupi.Speaking after inaugurating the fair, Mr. Herur said the event, ending on Sunday, is organised during the monsoons, would help farmers and the general public to buy and grow horticultural plants, flowers, and fruit trees. He said that the rains would be beneficial for the plants to grow abundantly during this time.“Plants are the lifeblood of all. They create a better environment around people, help the common man lead a healthy life, and provide fruits and vegetables. They provide food not only to humans but also to animals and birds,” he said.Farmers and the general public can obtain quality produce when they grow plants organically instead of using chemical fertilizers, he added, stressing that more emphasis should be placed on natural farming.Joint Director of Horticulture Department Kshama Patil said the plants available in the nursery would help in growing gardens around houses in urban areas. Saplings, manure, and gardening equipment were also available for farmers to take up horticulture.Stalls selling various varieties of Sankalpa food products, chia seeds, ragi dishes, millet purees, Madikeri butter fruits, jackfruits, and mangoes were opened.
