The Alagappa Medical College of Sciences would become functional in about a year as the institution awaited statutory approvals from the National Medical Commission, said Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust chairman Ramanathan Vairavan and Medical Director Anita Radhakrishnan here on Friday.Speaking to reporters, they said the project indicated the fulfilment of Dr. Alagappa Chettiar’s lifelong dream of establishing a medical institution dedicated to healthcare, education and service to the community. “Today, that vision is steadily becoming a reality,” they said.The institution is in the process of developing infrastructure and other basic requirements for medical college approval. “It is likely to be through in a few months, and once the approval is in place, the admission process would begin for the next academic year,” they said.The recent medical camp held on August 3, which received an overwhelming response, suggested that people were looking for quality diagnosis and efficient treatment. More than 2,100 patients registered for the camp and were given consultations by a team of specialists.The camp was organised not only to provide immediate medical care but also to introduce the community to a broad range of healthcare services that would be available through the Alagappa Multi-Speciality Hospital and Medical Sciences, Dr. Anita said.Currently, OP services have commenced in general medicine, general surgery, diabetology, ENT, paediatrics, dermatology and dental care, and are available from 9 a.m. onwards on all seven days. In addition, consultations with a wide range of specialists would be made available to patients, Dr. Ramanathan Vairavan said.Spelling out a few of the future plans, they said a comprehensive cardiac centre had been planned, covering primary prevention and early detection to advanced diagnostic testing, medical treatment and cardiac procedures. Likewise, plans were under way to establish a comprehensive cancer centre.In a nutshell, patients in the region need not travel long distances, as quality treatment would be available at their doorsteps.
