A 100-day action plan will be formulated to strengthen the functioning of Palakkad Medical College, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes K.A. Thulasi has said. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Minister said the decision was taken at a high-level meeting convened in Palakkad the other day, against the backdrop of the poor management of affairs at the institution of late.A monitoring committee has been constituted to oversee the construction of buildings required for the medical college and to resolve technical issues. The committee comprises the Ottappalam Subcollector, who is also the medical college special officer, as the convener, and the local MP, MLA, District Collector and the medical college director as members. The monitoring committee would meet every 10 days to review progress and hold discussions with the college’s technical and administrative committees. They have been instructed to ensure that the project is completed within 100 days.Technical obstaclesThe Minister said instructions had been issued to complete pending construction works and provide infrastructure facilities within 100 days. She asked the Public Works department to urgently complete the construction of the main block, OP block, OT block and OPC building and hand them over to the medical college administration.The technical obstacles delaying the completion of the boiler, manhole and mortuary buildings, as well as the sewage, drainage and gas supply systems, sewage treatment plant, modular laboratories and hostels, will be removed. Urgent steps will also be taken to fill the vacancies of teaching and non-teaching staff at the medical college.Request for fundsThe Minister said she had requested the Chief Minister for funds to equip the college in accordance with the Medical Council norms and also urged him to revamp the salary structure of teachers.
