Retired SAPS Captain, Ashley Houston, told the Madlanga Commission that statements of members who shot and killed alleged drug kingpin, Bevan Loftus, do not make sense.

A retired South African Police Service (SAPS) Captain Ashley Houston, has assessed the police version of the deadly 2023 shooting of Bevan Loftus and four others, questioning whether the number of rounds fired and the layout of the scene support claims that officers acted in self-defence.

Houston, who has extensive experience in tactical firearms use, training and combat, told the Madlanga Commission on Thursday that the accounts provided by five police members involved in the shooting looked like overkill.

“Something does not add up,” Houston told the commission.

Loftus, Ryan Santos, Chase Fynn, Michigan Hippolyte and Sihle Zondi were killed in April 2023 in what has been described as an assassination.
